Dev D: The Modern Day Interpretation of The Classic Novel “Devdas”

dev_d

Star rating:

Cast: Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Mahi Gill, Parakh Madan

Producer: Ronnie Screwvala

Director: Anurag Kashyap

Music Director: Amit Trivedi

Lyricist: Shellee, Amitabh Bhattacharya, Shruti Pathak, Mani

The classic novel, “Devdas” by one of the greatest Indian novelists, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay has always found a special place in Bollywood. This is the reason why there have been so many interpretations of this love saga in the tinsel town- beginning with the movie where KL Saigal played the intense character of Devdas to movies starring legendary Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan as the leading protagonist. Now, has come another interpretation of “Devdas” in the form of Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D. While the previous all films had the same title “Devdas”, this just released film bears a modern name. In fact, the title “Dev D” is apt to the film’s modern day backdrop. Written and directed by Anurag Kashyap and produced by UTV’s Ronnie Screwvala, this movie presents free thought, exuberance and recklessness of today’s youth.

The movie has been extremely well-written and may be liked by audience for being completely different from the other movies made till date on this classic novel. You may be shocked to see some of the intimate scenes between Dev (played by Abhay Deol) and Paro (played by a budding star, Mahi Gill), as such a thing has never been tried before in any of the previous Devdas movies. However, as it is a modern Devdas, such things may find acceptance with today’s generation. Even the character of Chandramukhi (Chanda in Dev D) played by Kalki Koechlin has been portrayed in bold shades, including an MMS scandal that turns her into a hooker.

However, unlike in previous Devdas movies, Chanda in Dev D leads a double life- that of a hooker and a student quite smartly. However, the scenes between Dev and Chanda were not at all impressive when compared to those between Dev and Paro. Also, Abhay’s indulgence into drugs post Paro’s marriage was sometimes becoming too unbearable to watch. The drugs chapter was, in fact, quite surprising, as it came from the maker of “No Smoking”. With Dev D, Kashyap has definitely tried to go a bit too far. While the movie can really displease those who have liked the old versions of Devdas played by Dilip Kumar and KL Saigal, it can be a great entertainer for today’s youth that is influenced by conflicting values, sense of independence, and to some extent, being rebellious.

To make the film appeal to today’s young generation, the entire star cast, including Abhay Deol was present at Al’s Tattoo parlour in Bandra. The music of the film, which too sounds rebellious just like the movie, has been composed by Amit Trivedi. With this film, Abhay Deol has come a long way. He has simply been splendid as Dev. The two young girls also pulled their characters quite well.

Gulal: A vibrant mix of emotions

Star rating:

Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Shrivastava, Piyush Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal, Ayesha Mohan

Producer: Zee Limelight

Director: Anurag Kashyap

Music Director: Piyush Mishra

Lyricist: Piyush Mishra

After making films like No Smoking and Dev D, director, Anurag Kashyap has come up with the movie Gulal. The movie can be related extremely well with today’s youth. Gulal is based on the current political system of the country. Though, there have been a number of movies based on the political system, such as Gangajal, Mrityudand and many other, Gulal is different because it targets the political system of Rajasthan, unlike its counterparts which are based on the political system of states like Bihar or Uttar Pradesh.

Gulal, the socio-political film is a story about the member of a royal family who stakes claim to his land in Rajasthan. The story of the movie revolves around Dilip Singh, (played by the debutant actor Raj Singh Chaudhary) a member of a royal family who comes to Rajpur to study law. He, however, gets embroiled into local politics. Dukey Bana (played by one of the finest actors of Bollywood, KK Menon) is one of the protagonists who masterminds a Rajputana movement in order to have a separate state ruled by Rajputs. He compels Dilip to contest in the college elections and makes him win. Later, they plan for a revolution, challenging the democracy.

Bollywood gets, yet another talented actor in Raj Singh Chaudhari. He is also the co-writer of the film. The acting of Kay Kay Menon is simply superb. His expressions in the film do most of the talking. Another show stealer is Deepak Dobriyal who plays his loyal assistant in the film. Mahie Gill also showcases tremendous screen presence.

While making this much awaited film, Anurag has undertaken an extensive research on the history of Rajputs and their stories of the formation of Republic India. He spent a lot of time with the royals of Jaipur and read history from Sharda Dwivedi to Romila Thapar to the Patiala Report to pen down the story of Gulal. Gulal is also Anurag’s tribute to poets like Sahir Ludhianvi’s and others who wrote aspiring and inspirational poems.

Extremely well directed, the movie consists of sarcastic one liners, making it hard hitting. Besides, the music of the movie is a perfect blend of hard hitting lyrics and melodious tunes. It is the film’s lyrics and music that make the film an extraordinary experience.

Straight and loving it

Cast: Vinay Pathak,Gul Panag,Siddharth Makkar,Achla Sachdev,Daman Baggan,Ketaki Dave,Anuj Chaudhary,Rasik Dave

Producer: Shripal Morakhia, Charlotte Wontner

Director: Parvathi Balgopalan

Music Director: Sagar Desai

Parvati Balgopalan who gave us the delightful romantic comedy, Rules-Pyar Ka Superhit Formula has now come up with the movie Straight. Produced by Shripal Morakhia and Charlotte Wontner, Straight is not another Dostana. In fact, it is the story of a man who discovers a totally new fear in his life – he might be a Gay.

Straight’ has been set against the backdrop of central London, where Pinu — a Londoner of Indian origin — (played by Vinay Pathak) successfully runs an Indian restaurant – ‘Gaylord’. A very simple man at heart, Pinu is happy with his life. However, Pinu is devoid of any real friends as no one can understand him. And Pinu always looked upon Rajat, (played by Siddharth Makkar) his foster brother, for advice.

One fine day, a stand up comic artist, Kamlesh ( played by Anuj Choudhary ) lands up at Pinu’s restaurant. Pinu hires him as a cook who can also do a stand up comic act to entertain the guests. Also, the very same day, Pinu hires Renu (Gul Panag) as the hotel’s cashier. These two new employees change things for the better for Pinu and his business starts soaring.

The three of them become very good friends and start hanging out together. Just when everything was going right for Pinu, certain situations make him believe that he might actually be having Gay leanings. In a daze now, he looks upon Rajat for advice. Rajat advices him to have fun with a woman. Now, Pinu has a new mission in his life – finding a woman for him. All the hell breaks loose and Pinu ends up getting involved in many tragicomic situations, one after the other.

Parvati has done a good job. She efficiently handles the comic portions and keeps the narrative engaging. Vinay once again manages to capture the attention of the audience. Gul Panag looks extremely hot and puts in a good performance. Newcomers, Anuj Choudhary and Siddharth Makkar are also good in the movie. Real life couple, Rasik and Ketki Dave are a fun to watch.

Music director, Sagar Desai has composed a peppy score for Straight. The film’s peppy lyrics and catchy chorus sets the movie apart from other Hindi movies.

Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge: Made To Be A Flopbuster

dnoondte_reh_jaaoge

Star rating:

Cast: Kunal Khemu, Paresh Kumar, Soha Ali Khan, Zayed Khan, Sonu Sood, Deepal Shaw, Johny Lever, Asrani, Razzak Khan, Avtar Gill

Producer: Ronnie Screwvala

Director: Umesh Shukla

Music Director: Sajid, Wajid

Lyricist: Jalees Sherwani, Shabbir Ahmed

Following the footsteps of the movie ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, which introduced the concept of movies based on swindles and cons, is the movie Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge. Directed by Omesh Shukla, the movie is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and is released under the banner ‘ UTV Spot Boy’.

The con of the movie is very simple. Anand Pawar (played by Kunal Khemu, who is still trying to find a foot hold in the industry) and Raj Chopra (played by the comedy king Paresh Rawal) look forward to become millionaires in the shortest time possible and so they raise Rs 100 crores from various financers to make a movie in a budget of mere 5 crores only. They wanted the film to be so pathetic that it gets chucked out from the theaters on the very first day and is termed as one of the biggest flops ever made in the Bollywood. And, once it so happens, they would run away with the remaining 95 crores.

In order to make a flopbuster, they rope in Aryan Kapoor (Sonu Sood) as the lead actor, and Parvez Asharraf (Johny Lever), a Pro-Pakistan person, is hired as the writer. However, somewhere down the line, Anand becomes greedy enough to cheat on his own girlfriend Neha Chattopadhayay (Soha Ali Khan), a small time theatre actress, by casting her as the main lead in his film to get her over the acting bug. However, the premier show, which was supposed to be a tryst with tomatoes and eggs, turns out to be a heavily applauded affair. Audience get to have a hearty laugh at the ungodly mix of Sholay, Gadar and Lagaan.

Director, Omesh Shukla has managed to carry out the spoofs quite convincingly, and the actors have done their best to capture the expression and style of the original actors. The movie offers a much needed break from the stress and strains of out daily lives.

The movie Dhoondte Reh Jaoge offers few comic numbers that would keep popping up through the narrative. Sajid-Wajid kick start the album with the title song Dhoondte Reh Jaoge. This is the best song in the album and does boast of a fun quotient. The lyrics of the film has been provided by Jalees Sherwani and Shabbir Ahmed. The song has been composed in a style that is synonymous to that of Lakshmikant-Pyaarelal.

Aa Dekhen Zara: The title says it all

poster5

Cast: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bipasha Basu, Rahul Dev, Sophie Choudhary, Bobby Vats, Shrivas Nydu, Deepak Dhariwal, Biswajeet Chatterjee, Sameer Siddiqui

Producer: Viki Rajani

Director: Jehangir Surti

The peppy dance number from Sanjay Dutt’s debut film Rocky lends its name to Neil Nitin Mukesh’s second film – Aa Dekhen Zara. The pair of Neil Nitin Mukesh and sexy Bong bomb Bipasha Basu will be seen on the screen for the very first time in Jehangir Surti’s venture. Produced by Viki Rajani, the film is launched under the banner of Eros International.

The story of ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’ revolves around the life of Ray Acharya (played by Neil Nitin Mukesh). Ray is a photographer by profession and is struggling to establish his name and identity. Nothing seems to go in the right direction for him, until he comes across a ‘special’ camera which he inherits from his grandfather. The camera is ‘magical’ and adds the missing ‘luck’ factor in his life.

The camera brings an overnight transformation in Ray’s destiny. From being an ordinary guy, Ray turns into someone who has loads of money and power. The camera also helps him meet the love of his life, Simi (played by Bipasha Basu). Simi is a DJ by profession. She believes in doing what she wants and allows no one to dictate her life.

Life is going on smooth for Ray, but it doesn’t take long for the greedy conmen to arrive at his doorstep, desperate to lay their hands on the magical camera. But that is not all, Ray feels that he can escape the shooter (played by Rahul Dev) and the corrupt RAW agents, but how will he escape the camera’s prediction of his all-black future.

The concept of the movie is smart and new and Jehangir Surti has done a good job. Jehangir is able to maintain the thrill of the plot till the end of the movie. He is also able to make his characters enact what their roles demand. Moreover, all the characters are well-suited in their respective roles. Neil, who had already grabbed eyeballs in his debut venture, Johnny Gaddar, once again displays charm and an effortless grace before the camera. And Bipasha too is excellent in her acting.

The music of the movie is catchy and innovative. It will make you sit up and take notice of the composition. What adds to the score of the move is that Neil Nitin Mukesh also exercises his vocal chords. He lives up to legacies of his predecessor’s in rip-roaring title track ”Aa Dekhen Zara”.

Aloo Chat:Old wine in new bottle

thumb-poster2

Cast: Aftab Shivdasani, Aamna Shariff, Linda Arsenio, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Manoj Pahwa, Dolly Ahluwalia, Meenakshi,Sanjay Mishra

Producer: Anuj Saxena, A. P. Parigi, Gary S

Director: Robby Grewal

Music Director: Samirrudin, Rdb

The movie Aloo chat has all the ingredients of a perfect masala movie. Directed by Robby Grewal, the movie offers a liberal dose of fun and laughter, but at the same time leaves a pertinent question regarding discrimination of people on the basis of caste and creed.

The film, set in Delhi, has all the trappings of a middle class Punjabi household. Nikhil (played by Aftab Shivdasani) belongs to an orthodox Punjabi family. He falls in love with a Muslim girl Aamna (played by Aamna Shariff — Madhuri Dixit of the small screen) while studying in US. On his vacation back home, Nikhil is in a fix about how to disclose the truth to his family of having fallen in love with a Muslim girl.

His family comprises a ‘generation gap’ father, Purshottam (played by the seasoned actor Kulbhushan Kharbanda), his typical housewife mom Seeto (played by Meenakshi), a grandma “Beeji” (played by Dolly Ahluwalia) and an overenthusiastic uncle Chaddami (played by Sanjay Mishra).

Nikhil, finally seeks help from his father’s best friend Hakim (played by Manoj Pahwa), a sexologist by profession. Hakim devises a smart plan with the help of an American girl Nikki’s (played by Linda).

Director Robby Grewal deserves a huge applause for his treatment of the subject and his narrative structure. Even though the subject is not novel, he has treated it in a witty manner. As a reason, the film is devoid of the Bollywood melodrama. The witty one-liners in the movie make it interesting from the first till the last frame. Some subtle messages are nicely incorporated within the film.

The actors in the film have also suited their characters perfectly well. Aftab is successful in showing his natural flair for comedy. A big name on the Indian television, Aamna Shariff is looking very beautiful in the movie and manages to pull off her character well. Even though Kulbhushan Kharbanda plays a serious character, sometimes even his expressions have you in splits.

13 B: Vikram K Kumar Succeeds in Scaring You With His Spooky Story

13_b

Star rating:

Cast: R Madhavan, Neetu Chandra, Sachin Khedekar, Murli Sharma, Poonam Dhillon

Director: Vikram K. Kumar

Music Director: Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonca

Cinematographer: H Laxminarayan, P.C. Sriram

Editor: Sreekar Prasad

13 B is one of the most intelligently made thrillers in the recent times. With the title of the film focusing on a number considered ominous, the movie builds a scary premise right from the very beginning. Directed by the debutant director, Vikram K Kumar, a National Award winner for his short film, Silent Scream, this bilingual movie is released in Hindi as 13B and as Yaavarum Nalam in Tamil.

Contrary to most Ramsays (who hold the horror genre monopoly) movies who scare through shabby masks, Sanskrit shlokas, and badly made-up ghosts, 13 B scores on many counts. The setting of the movie is very real and anyone staying in urban cities can identify with the script as it makes good use of every day life happenings. The urban story setting of the movie is similar to Ram Gopal Varma’s, Bhoot. The movie also depicts a family shifting into their new apartment, 13 B in a city high-rise. The big joint family comprises Manohar (played by R Madhavan, Hrithik Roshan of South), his wife (Neetu Chandra), mother (Poonam Dhillon), sister, bother, sister-in-law, and their kids.

From day one, Manohar experiences strange occurrences in the building, but keeps ignoring them until he happens to watch a daily afternoon soap on his TV that his family is hooked on. Soon he realizes that the script of the serial coincides with the screenplay of his life. The characters in the soap correspond to that of his family and the events of the show run parallel to his real life. Like most horror films, 13 B’s protagonist’s is not shown disbelieving in the supernatural. Rather, Manohar comes to terms with the horror in his house pretty soon and probes into the puzzling past. The end of the film is equally interesting.

Vikram V Kumar succeeds in offering the audience the right chills and thrills just when they do not expect them. Even things as simple as a lift and mobile phone are smartly used as a prop to scare the audience. This gripping thriller also succeeds in scaring the daylights out of the audience. The background music by Tubby-Parik succeeds in elevating the tension.

The film is a must see for Madhavan’s superb act. He brilliantly conveys the dilemma that he faces and his vulnerability in handling the bizarre situations around him. Neetu Chandra in a less make up look gives him good support. Poonam Dhillon, who has made comeback after over a decade, is good too. The music of the movie by none other than the trio: Shankar, Ehasaan, and Loy, also offers a wide variety. The item number ‘Oh Sexy Mama’ not only catches the attention, but also maintains a dark and edgy touch to suit the theme of the movie. 13B promises big entertainment and is successful in keeping you glued to your seat.

Slumdog Millionaire Sweeping the 81st Oscars

Oscar Award

The 81st Oscar Academy Award ceremony was special for all Indians. The first reason was that Slumdog Millionaire, based on Mumbai’s Dharavi-Asia’s largest slum, was the major contender for the Oscars. Most of the star cast of this globally acclaimed movie were Indians, including its leading lady, Freida Pinto. The second obvious reason was the 10 nominations for this film at the Oscars, which include 3 Indians-A.R Rahman, Gulzar, and Resul Pookutty. On the morning of 23rd February, India rejoiced at Slumdog Millionaire’s win at the 81st Oscars. Bagging 8 Oscars, the film turned the global spotlight on the talent of Bollywood.

The person who made us proud the most was none other than A.R Rehman. This music maestro from Chennai bagged two Oscars- one came for the best music score and the second for the best song “Jai Ho” which he shared with the lyricist Gulzar. Although, Rehman is one of the world’s best-selling recording artists, his win at the Oscars will take the Indian music on the international stage even more prominently than before. Another Indian who made us proud the same day was Resul Pookutty who won the Oscar for the best sound mixing. His win further emphasized the fact that there is no dearth of talent in Bollywood. If given a chance, Bollywood too can make a deep impact on the whole world.

The global acknowledgment of the excellence with which Slumdog Millionaire has been made changed the lives of all the people associated with the film. While Anil Kapoor and Irfan Khan walked the red carpet at Oscars for the first time in their lives, the leading lady, Frieda Pinto got the opportunity to be the cover girl of Vogue Magazine. Labeled as the new style sensation, she has also bagged a role in Woody Allen’s next film. The success of the film also changed the lives of two child artists- Azharuddin Ismail and Rubiana Ali Qureshi. Both, presently, live in Garib Nagar Slum, an area surrounded by open sewage, rubbish and narrow alleys of shanty homes. While Rubina lives in a small room, Azhar lives with his family in a makeshift cloth shelter. They both can now hope for a better living as the Maharashtrian Government is planning to give them apartments from a specially reserved batch of government properties.

However, the success of Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars may prove to be a threat for the Bollywood producers. Like Danny Boyle and Christian Colson, there are many big Hollywood production companies that have already expressed their eagerness to make films in India. The presence of extraordinary talent coupled with low cost may prompt many international producers to try their luck in India. This could be a major blow to the Indian producers who may not be able to shell out as much money as their counterparts.

Delhi 6: A Kaleidescope Showing The Vibrant Colours of Delhi City

delhi_6

Star rating:

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Om Puri, Gulshan Grover

Producer: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Ronnie Screwvala

Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

Music Director: A. R. Rahman

Cinematographer: Ravi K. Chandran

Have you ever wondered why Rakesh Omprakash Mehra chose Delhi 6 as the title for his newly released film? Well, with the deep intention to portray the multifaceted old Delhi city and its inhabitants in his new film, Rakesh Mehra chose this title, as Delhi 6 is nothing but the postal code of the old Delhi city, consisting of the Red Fort and the Chandani Chowk area.

The film has been directed marvelously, showcasing every aspect of the old Delhi, starting from the narrow lanes and crowded areas to more serious issues like caste, untouchability, Hindu-Muslim tensions, and treachery of priests and politicians. The story revolves around Roshan (played by Abhishek Bachchan), an American born who brings his ailing grandmother (played by yesteryear beauty Waheeda Rehman) to Delhi. He falls in love with Sonam Kapoor, a middle class Delhi girl, who has set many dreams for her. From there the story takes us to the chaos that is created by our strongly held beliefs. Rakesh Mehra has been successful in depicting how sometimes our beliefs can make our lives so miserable. However, it also brings into light the aspirations of every modern Indian soul. Delhi 6 is Mehra’s third directorial venture and may also win him accolades just like his two previous films, Aks and Rang De Basanti.

Abhishek Bachchan was just apt for the role of Roshan. However, the real show stealer has been Bittu, a sweet, modern Delhi girl, played by Sonam Kapoor. If papa Anil Kapoor is basking under the success of Slumdog Millionaire, the daughter is not lagging far behind. In spite of the movie being Sonam’s second, she just looked perfect. There is no doubt why all big brands are opting for Sonam Kapoor over the likes of Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor, and many more. If you see her in Delhi 6, you will know that another star kid is there to make it big. Delhi 6 is special for it also brings together father-son duo on screen one more time. Yes, the film also stars Amitabh Bachchan. They were last seen together in Sarkar Raj.

Delhi 6 has already started receiving good response from the audience owing to its great music score, composed by Oscar Awards nominated A.R Rehman. The song, “Masakali” starring beautiful Sonam is already a chartbuster for its fluttering mood. Overall, the music album is a perfect amalgamation of many hues from the world of music- be it Sufi, Indian classical, hip-hop, or folk.

Shahrukh Khan’s Home Production Billu is All Ready to Hit The Jackpot – Movie Review

billu

Star rating:

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Irfaan Khan, Asrani, Lara Dutta, Ompuri, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone

Producer: Gauri Khan

Director: Priyadarshan

Music Director: Pritam

Lyricist: Gulzar, Sayeed Quadri

Amidst all the controversies surrounding the use of the word “Barber”, the Priyadarshan’s Billu hit the theaters today. Initially titled “Billu Barber”, the film is a story about a simple man (played by Irfan Khan) who works as a barber in a small village. Produced by Shahrukh Khan’s wife, Gauri Khan, the film underwent a change in its title following the objection of the Hairdressers’ Associations of Mumbai to the use of the word “Barber” in the title. In fact, Shahrukh Khan, who has made a guest appearance in the movie, has gone a step further by planning to invite barbers and hairstylists across Mumbai for the premiere of “Billu.”

I wanted to watch the movie solely because of its brilliant story and of course, Irfan Khan. Known as one of the most talented actors currently in Bollywood, Irfan Khan has marked his presence by doing a multitude of characters. This time, he played the character of a small town barber who lives with his beautiful wife, Bindiya (played by Lara Dutta) and two cute kids. Both Irfan and Lara have been brilliant in portraying the life of an ordinary couple. They know how to live happily even without enough money and all luxuries of life. The entry of Shahrukh Khan in the movie as a superstar was simply awesome. The special dance numbers featuring King Khan with Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone can keep everyone glued to their seats. Priyadarshan has once again hit the right chord by being able to create a lively comparison of a simple village life and the glamorous life that of a movie- star.

It is not only the story of Billu that catches your attention, but also its music. Composed by Pritam, there are 15 tracks with a combination of both originals and remixes. This is the first ever Bollywood movie, where a composer has tried all styles, ranging from bhangra to rap, sufi, folk and also the western style. So, if you are a music lover, the film is a retreat. Also, there are a dozen singers, including Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, KK, and many fresh voices in the film. In particular, the song “Marjaani” sung by Sunidhi and Sukhwinder, and the soulful sufi number “Jaaon Kahan” sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan are the two most attractive songs in the album. However, in totality, the music of Billu could not match up to the levels of “Jab We Met”. You may love them in the theater, but once you are out, you may not even remember their tune.

_____________

Human Trafficking

Movie highlights very serious issue of human trafficking and the message ro anyone that is being impressed with stories of going to a Western country to work abroad, even if you have no known skills or education the message is, f it seems too good to be true then it really is. The movie also teaches young women a very good lesson in trusting too easily. Cassie was betrayed by the man that she loved at the time but if she had known who he really was before trusting him wholeheartedly then she may have not gotten herself into such a predicament. After all Spencer was not really in the dark about why the girls were going to Italy.

Revenge

Cassie threatened Spencer about telling his fiancee for too long. She should have realised that the approach that she was taking was not going to work and just made the most out of the situation. At the point where Spencer tells his fiancee everything the game is up. He has nothing left to lose.

NollywoodForever Says What?

This fool Spencer tried to jump off the balcony that was barely ten foot high to kill himself. Really though? SAY WHAT? Can one even get winded from jumping such a height? Lol
_____________

Conclusion:
I would recommend the movie if it were way shorter than it was. I loved the storyline, although I was confused in the first ten minutes I quickly picked it up. Mercy was excellent as usual as the wronged ex seeking revenge. Muna too played his part well. He was very believable in every range if emotions. There was a good build up of tension in the movie and the pace was just right. There wasn’t a moment during the movie where I felt bored. I would have easily given part 1 and 2 70% but after starting to watch the 3 parts that was the continuation My Best Enemy the movie just dragged on way too long and started to get boring. Make your judgement!

NollywoodForever.Com Rating – 74%

Synopsis:

Charles’ girlfriend Lisa played by Halima Abubakar believes that he works for Chevron but in reality he is a pauper who is deceiving her. He even has her believing that the friend that he squats with is his houseboy. In reality it is his friend’s uncle’s house and he is broke. Charles played by Nonso Diobi is a compulsive liar and his lies extend to other girls who also become his girlfriends. He even finds himself in a clothes shop and telling a girl that he is Ray Martin a well known stylist to the stars as well as that he owns the shop. In actuality the shop also belongs to his friend’s uncle.

_____________
SPOILERS:
Gina played by Oge Okoye is a banker who arranges girls for clients to make sure that they choose her bank to do business with. Everybody is on the hustle trying to be on the come up by using someone else, and of course it is only fitting that they all get their comeuppance. None

The outfits in this movie were absolutely horrendous and way too matchy matchy. In one scene Halima Abubakar is wearing a beige dress with a red belt, red necklace and red bangle and then to make it all the more horrendous blue claws with green eye shadow and orange hair. It was just atrocious.

Nollywood Forever Says What?
What was Charles thinking of by not wanting to give his friend a cut of the money he got? Telling the boy, “I owe u nothing absolutely nothing” after treating the boy like a houseboy for how long and using his car as if it was his own how did he think the boy was not going to mess him up? Arrant nonsense that was a classic case of someone forgetting where they have come from.

Funny Scene
Cleo played by Chika Ike is really worked up and irate. She is ready to go and do some damage to Charles but before she goes she just has to put on her yellow bangles that match her yellow earrings and her gaudy gold link belt. Na wa ooo. All I could think was millions have been stolen from your account and you are there arranging your outfit!

Conclusion:

I would recommend this movie. The movie ended well all it all it was a thoroughly enjoyable, funny, satisfying watch that was well performed by all. The story made sense and was very well executed. I guess the moral of the story is greedy people never prosper. Charles got greedy and then even double crossed the friend that has always been there for him ending up with him having nothing. Angela Okorie is credited as Tasha but I didn’t catch sight of her at all, perhaps there was a mix up unless there is some sort of continuation.

Synopsis:

Genevieve Nnaji plays a femme fatale called Isabella that goes by many names to many different men. She appears sweet and innocent but underneath that exterior is a steely hustler who will go to any length to make money whether its stealing diamonds, organising a hit or trafficking children’s organs. She alongside her grandfather and Archbishop Theodore played by Olu Jacobs front a children’s charity called the Wellspring foundation which they use to traffick children’s organs amidst other criminal and immoral activity.
_____________

Well well well I was surprised to see this movie at my local movie stall as I had thought that I was up to date with all Genevieve’s upcoming films. After digging a little deeper I have found out that the movie was shot 2 years ago and is only now being released.

SPOILERS:

The Storyline
I liked the way that different bits of the story were unravelled. As a viewer you are not spoon fed, you have to figure things out for yourself which makes a nice change. Nollywood practioners very often think that we the viewers are dummies and need to be spoon-fed every single detail.

However there is a point up on to which this lack of detail works and sometimes in the movie it did not work. Some things were not made clear at all. For instance there is a part in the movie where Isabella takes her 3 friends and sticks up a car in the night. It was out of the blue and we are never even introduced to those friends beforehand and even afterwards it is some time before we are reintroduced to them. It all felt a bit too vague.

Story Development
We didn’t see Uche and Isabella fall in love. We don’t need it spelt out to us but it was way too sudden and those cheesy walks on the beach didn’t cut it. I know in Nollywood those walks on the beach equal love but a walk on the beach doesn’t equal love in real life. Some originality please!

Character Development
I didn’t like Uche’s character. I didn’t think he suited Isabella. He was too lame and corny for her and came across quite creepy to me. I couldn’t believe that Isabella fell for his stalker behaviour. He was not smooth at all like I’d imagine a guy that shed fall for to be. I felt that their relationship was very poorly developed. I didn’t feel a connection between the two characters It was like play acting. Not to say that both Ecow and Genevieve did not do a good job, on the contrary they did individually, it just didn’t come together. Genevieve needs more meaty roles. This character could have been meaty but just wasn’t well written or developed. Isabella is not as smart as she is purported to be. Why would she taunt her fiance’s sister like that knowing full well that it will cause problems for her? That didn’t even make sense.

The Soundtrack
The music messed up a few times in the movie where scenes were changing. It was rather messy. You would hear off beat piano chords and then a violing type music over it. The music was defnitely off putting an annoying in section

Rituals
The Wellspring foundation is a charitable children’s organisation but beyond that front they are harvesting children in order to snatch their organs and sell them. We see how evil can lurk behind well meaning facades. The head of the organisation Archbishop Theodore played by Olu Jacobs is even a bishop. This means that he is able to mask his evil doings to an even greater extent as once people see his bishop’s robes they automatically assume he can do no wrong. It is important in life for people to delve beneath the surface and make their own judgements about people and situations rather than making assumptions based on what you think a person should be like. Because someone owns the title of archbishop/pastor/priest yes they should be a bastion of morality but the reality may be very different.

Splitting The Movie Into Different Parts
Got to the end of part 2 and hadn’t even reached the climax. How bloody annoying. There has to be a revolution in Nollywood. With the way movies are being split up how will they ever compete in the international arena? If it is the marketers that are causing this issue then there is no role for them in the future of Nollywood. This practise stinks and encourages piracy. Sometimes even if you watch the first part of a movie and enjoyed it you may never be able to get your hands on the continuation. You may never even know what the continuation is called.

Nollywood Forever Says What?
That was a bit stupid Isabella putting a wig over a weave in the beginning, after all its all fake anyway so where is the disguise? SAY WHAT? No different to how u would be changing your hair up if you weren’t in disguise.

Why are Uches sister Kaycee and her husband so against Isabella. SAY WHAT? It was not revealed that they had known her previously so their disapproval was way over the top, especially as Kaycee could give no reason for her disgust except “she’s not your type.”

Why is Isabella so nasty to her co-worker friends? SAY WHAT? Isn’t she worried they will expose her business to her husband out of spite?

The receptionist gave the real escort girls room 225 yet we see Isabella and Yvonne go into room 113. SAY WHAT?
_____________

Conclusion:

I would recommend the movie. I liked the story and although it had the potential to be so much more it was still an interesting and well acted watch. We only see Desmond Elliot for a few minutes at beginning of the movie so it is inevitable that there will be at LEAST another 2 parts. I look forward to finding out what role he plays in the movie and to see how the story ties up.

Synopsis:

When Jimmy played by Ramsey Noah loses his job through no fault of his own his family is plunged into poverty not even sure if they can any longer keep a roof over their heads. After endless job searching he becomes desperate. Seeing that his friend Mike is doing well as a Pastor he asks him if he can join his ministry. His wife Chioma played by Genevieve Nnaji is not happy about this telling him that is is not right for him to join the ministry considering the fact that he does not have the calling. Despite her worries he joins his friend Mike in the church business and then with the help of an old friend branches out and works towards the growth of his own ministry.

_____________

SPOILERS:

The Church As A Business
Jimmy is upset when at the end of his first sermon which is so diligently prepared the money received from the church members is 350 naira “only” he exclaims to Mike,

“Can you imagine after my will prepared sermon this is all we made in todays service? 305 naira? A meagre 305 naira.”

It is clear his intentions aren’t in preaching for the right reasons. He simply sees it as a way to make money as opposed to being passionate about spreading the word. Mike sees that and tells him,

“Look Jimmy, don’t be ridiculous. You sound as if the church is a business investment where you expect returns everyday… I believe the people gave in their best and god accepted it and that is the most improtant thing.”

Jimmy makes a good point when he retorts back,

“Face it this is the 21st century and this is a country where some churches and some Pastors are even richer than some state governments.”

Indeed today we can see in mega churches and TV evangelism that the church has indeed become a business. What do you think about this?

Corruption in the Church
We see how false pastors only interested in fame and money win people over with their suave manors, flashy dress and using the lords name over and over.

In one scene he decides he wants to go to build a church in America he addresses the congregation and tells them,

If you feel god has touched you to do gods work please rise I need just 10 million naira. It’s a token fee for our lord”

Hmmmm really. What will the Lord do with 10 million naira? Indeed oooo

Poverty
It has been said that to be poor is a crime and watching this movie you would indeed think so. As jimmy becomes more and more preoccupied with making money he becomes more deceitful, short tempered and simply unpleasant. The extent that he will go to to beat poverty is unbelievable. You can see just how far poverty and desperation can drive an otherwise reasonable person.

My Favourite Scene
This is just after Pastor Badmus is caught and Jimmy relays what he saw to his wife. Initially it appears that he is trying to cover up his knowing anything and then as the scene continues and his wife is so shocked and horrified by a pastor doing rituals he becomes more and more agitated. He tells her that they should pray for pastor Badmus to which she exclaims,

“Who will pray for him? ME? God forbid. Rather that I pray god continues to expose all those fake satanic pastors who go about destroying innocent souls. May he rain his holy ghost fire upon all of them… A Pastor? Chei wonders shall never end. The church is no longer a place to worship the lord. It is a place for money making.”

It is as though he is only just realising the gravity of what he has done when he hears his wife’s extreme opposition to his friend’s actions. This scene is brilliantly and subtly acted by Ramsey Noah.

Conclusion:

I would definitely recommend this movie. Genevieve Nnaji and Ramsey Noah make a great pair. The glory days of Nollywood oooh please come back. The moral of the story is, if it seems too good to be true then it most definitely is. There is no shortcut to anything good in this life. If you want to be wealthy and roll around in cash you are going to have to work hard for it. POINT BLANK.

Midnight Confession – 2011

Anita Joseph – Martina
Ejike Chinedu – Prof
Chikere Guide – Stanley
Tissy Nnachi – Dan

Portrayal of Women in Nollywood

NollywoodForever.Com Rating – 5%

Synopsis:

Olivia played by Angela Okorie is keeping secrets from her husband Rex played by Nonso Diobi. One day she is faced with her past when one of her husband’s friends’ Stanley played by Chikere Guide recognises her. It turns out that she had been very wayward in her past and had robbed the man of 3 million, which was everything he had at that time, leaving his in abject poverty. He is now on a revenge mission and demanding 10 million, 1 million in interest for each of the 7 years that the money has been missing. Stanley threatens to reveal Olivia’s scandalous past if she does not pay up in 7 days. Will Olivia go to robbing her husband in order to save the marriage?

Abortion
After Olivia and Rex have been for a fertility test. The doctor comes to house and says,

“Your fertility analysis shows that your womb has been tampered with”

Huh? How? Not very medical terminology for a doctor to use. He goes on to say,

“It was also ascertained that it was caused due to the series of abortions you’ve had”

How would a doctor come out and say this if he was not told this by the patient? How would this doctor know how many abortions that she has had or that her womb was damaged because of this reason? This scene is so so shoddy and the dialogue is crap crap crap. I just had to shake my head at the screen and wonder if I should press eject ASAP. The writers wanted to show that wife is not honourable but went about it in a very basic uncreative way.

After this scene it got even worse because the movie goes a step further to say that 7 professional doctors came with the result that the Olivia’s womb had been tampered with because of abortion. How effing insulting to the viewer. I’m not even a doctor and it sounded ridiculous to me. How can any of them confirm the womb damage is because of multiple abortions and none of them were her doctor? The lack of storyline research is frustrating and annoying.

Religion/ Childlessness
A pastor walks up to Olivia in the streets and says,

“Daughter of Zion, what is it that you are hiding that is hindering your blessings and giving your enemy powers over you?”

All because Olivia does not have children it is assumed that she is evil and up to no good. This movie sends out a very bad message. It is almost promoting the abuse of women that are childless and giving the message that childless women are that way through fault of their own, because they have done something bad. That is a very dangerous and ignorant path to tread.

Masturbation
The movie even gets in a whole thing about masturbation being evil and blah blah blah. *yawn* I tire o. This film reads like Christian propaganda for the intellectually challenged.

Incest/ Abuse
Oh look at this crap. Because the woman doesn’t sleep with his wife enough he goes to rape his daughter. I really cannot stand this movie. Chikere Guide you are an ingrate. How could you write this absolute drivel? Men do not rape THEIR OWN CHILDREN because their wives to not sleep with them enough. Men fuck kids because they are paedophiles. POINT BLANK and to suggest otherwise is absolutely ignorant.

Treatment of women
When the blame for a FATHER ABUSING HIS CHILD is not being put on the mother for not sleeping with her husband enough, it is put on the CHILD. She is made out to be a seductress. Even as an adult they have her recounting her father raping her and telling her husband “my father was fond of me” What the fuck??? For real? This is how you refer to rape and incest? I’m pissed.

The Cast
Chikere Guide cannot act but he put himself in his own film. Wondiaful. NOT. Angela Okorie and Nonso Diobi did the best that they could but they couldn’t save such trash. I’m a bit disappointed that Nonso would read the script and agree to partake in this. He is established so I would expect more. I would expect that he would not take any old script that comes along. Angela Okorie I am giving a pass because she is up and coming and may not be able to command as much as Nonso just yet. Everybody gotta eat right?

Conclusion:

I would so NOT recommend this stupid useless and idiotic movie. The script was not well thought out at all. Chikere Guide you should be ashamed for putting this CRAP out there. The script is stupidly bad. I was shaking my head from beginning to end. The sound was low and sometimes static, and even in parts there was a howling screechy noise in the back This movie is just awful put simply, especially the storyline and script. What is in your mind Chikere Guide. I hope NEVER to be assaulted by a from from you AGAIN. By the time I got to part 2 I was ready for it to be over. It was so sad I bought KFC to watch this crap. Felt like a total waste as I was put off my juicy chicken. Chikere Guide also did Before The Ring. I mean that was a bad movie but this tops it majorly. THUMBS SIX FEET UNDER!

Burlesque

Burlesque
Reviewer's Rating: This entry has a rating of 3 Loading ... Loading ...Posted on 17 March 2011 by mazda909

The glitz and glamour of burlesque and the “small-town-girl-with-big-time-dreams” scenario come together in above titled film directed by
Steve Antin. Ali (Christina Aguilera) escaping from some back water town in Iowa heads to the big city of Los Angeles with the age-old dream of making it as a singer/dancer. One evening she comes across a burlesque lounge owned by tough former dancer Tess (Cher) who is struggling to keep her beloved business afloat. Mesmerized by the art and beauty of burlesque Ali sets about trying to learn what she can, watching from the sidelines while waitressing at the lounge. Lurking in the shadows is business man Marcus (Eric Dane), who attempts to buy the lounge for selfish reasons. At the lounge Ali makes friends with Tess’ right hand man Sam (Stanley Tucci), and the bartender (and love interest) Jack (Cam Gigandet). As Ali’s classic scenario dictates she works hard at the bottom of the star-studded path to fame, but the moment appears where she is put under the spotlight and shows what she’s got in the talent department, wowing everyone. Following that ‘time to shine’ moment Ali is shown the ups and downs to fame, making Ali realise what is important to her.

In her first silver screen role Aguilera doesn’t do a half bad job at playing the talented Ali. The former Mouseketeer conveys an innocent, doe-eyed naivety in Ali which could have come off as dull and annoying in another genre, but works well for this glitter-esque film. The other big singing talent, making her first movie appearance since 2003 is Cher. As Tess, Cher naturally comes across as strong and wilful, and though it is enjoyable seeing Cher unsurprisingly fit in with this genre, she never lets you forget who she is. All you can think of when you see her on screen is “Oh look its Cher!” or in my case (in a Cher like voice) “If I could turn back tiiiime..”  Stanley Tucci is commendable for being the only member of the supporting cast who can compete with Cher in this flick, even when they appear in the same scene.

The biggest highlight and a definite draw card besides seeing the two main ladies on screen together is the music. Before seeing this movie you walk in knowing that Cher and Aguilera can sing, but the music numbers like “Welcome to Burlesque”, “Express”, and “You haven’t seen the last of me” certainly don’t fail to impress. Most of the numbers are like the Golden time in Hollywood when musicals were a commonality in film unlike today. The costume department has done a great job, the outfits the girls wear are provocative yet classy with a hint of mystery - just as burlesque is meant to be! The pearl outfit Aguilera wears during “But I am a good girl” is quite creative and leaves little to the imagination.    Despite the cliche storyline, the film works well due to its being placed in the world of burlesque. Solid acting, high-quality musical numbers and dazzling costumes make for pleasurable viewing….Welcome to Burlesque!

Is Point Break The Greatest Movie Ever? (No) *Possible Spoilers*

Imagine, if you will, a world where the rules don’t apply. A world where both Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze are still both pretty f**king cool. Now top that off with some psychotic ramblings by Gary Busey. What do you get? The coolest movie ever.

Point break first came out a time that is very precious to me: like 1994 or something. I was young ex quarter back who decided that football wasnt enough and I wanted to become a federal agent and- wait a sec that’s not my life. That the plot to this wicked f**king movie. Keeanu reeves plays Johnny Utah a rookie cop who gets his break when he is transferred to the robbery division of the FBI. His partner: Gary busey. The craziest f**k ever. Now I think I can pinpoint exactly when during filming he…i dont know…. he started SMOKING CRYSTAL METH. The other actors must have had a tough time keeping a straight face while busey spouts classic cinema lines like: “I was taking shrapnel in key-sa, when you were shitting on your hands and rubbing it on your face” Like that? How bout this: “I was in the field when you were popping zits on your funny face and jerking off to a goddamn sears catalog” I mean its all classic.

Crazy Busey has this theory that these bank robbers they’ve been chasing are surfers. So its off to the beach for these feds. Keeanu is not at the Matrix point in his career so he’s closer to Bill and Ted then Neo. Its at the beach where he meets a young hottie played by Lori Petty (F**k, she’s hot. Remember tank girl? Ice-t was a kangaroo) and he knows that she’s his in to the surfer life. So to convince her to teach him to surf. He tells her a nice heartwarming tale about how HIS PARENTS ARE DEAD. Total bullshit. She bites and its through her that he meets Patrick Swayze’s character who can convince people with a simple powerful speech to do anything he wants. He convinces a guy full of bullets to jump out an airplane. He’s the David Koresh of surfing. Keanu thinks perhaps swayze is the leader of the robbers. Is he right? Needless to say that’s when the ultimate hair shaking begins.

Anyways, I wont spoil all the movie for ya but I definatley think it’s the ultimate action movie ever made…in 1994…that stars Swayze and Reeves. I will tell you that if you rent this flick: Smoke a joint and maybe have a break halfway through to masturbate.

The Fighter (2011)

Loading ... Loading ...

Wahlberg lands a KO…

Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Melissa Leo & Mickey O’Keefe

Directed by: David O. Russell

Screenplay by: Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson

Plot:

Micky Ward (Wahlberg) has aspirations to become a boxing champ but before he can, he must overcome his equally well-meaning and destructive family first.

Verdict:

Originally meant as a directional project for Darren Aronofsky with the likes of Brad Pitt and Matt  Damon pencilled in to star, The Fighter’s eventual completion with Three Kings director David O. Russell behind the camera and Mark Wahlberg in the leading role with Christian Bale for support, has indeed been a long time coming but thankfully its been worth the wait.

Wahlberg was always interested in the role of underdog boxer Micky ‘Irish’ Ward and four years before he even stepped in front of the camera, he began training, met with the real Micky Ward and even built his own boxing ring in his own backyard. Wahlberg’s commitment shines through in the finished product, physically and emotionally. Wahlberg gives a quietly affecting, understated performance that unselfishly allows Bale to fully grasp the fierier role as Ward’s older brother Dickie Eklund, a former boxer who once sent Sugar Ray Leonard to the mat but is now suffering with a crack addiction. And boy does Bale take full advantage, showing plenty of commitment himself by once again shedding the pounds to physically replicate the man he is portraying. But it’s more than just the physical transformation that impresses, Bale’s firework display of manic antics and eventual redemption wins us over with ease and if the Academy don’t finally give him his due with what would be a hard-earned Oscar, it would have to be considered a blatant snub.

Elsewhere, Melissa Leo impresses as Ward’s fearsome mother and Amy Adams once again shows her considerable talent for more dramatic roles as Ward’s strong-minded girlfriend; their relationship wholly convincing.

Despite ticking off the cliches as it goes - underdog boxer endures pain, embarrassment and multiple, physically demanding training sessions on his way to redemption and glory - O. Russell’s film is more about family values and gritty realism. The latter theme stretching to the police sergeant Mickey O’Keefe who helped train Ward appearing in the film as himself, despite having no acting experience whatsoever. The authentic Lowell setting and Boston accents also go some way to help the realistic approach. There are even nice comedic touches. Like Dickie’s escape route from the crack house he regularly visits and pretty much every scene with Ward’s seven hard-ass sisters.

But either way you look at it, not since Stallone’s Rocky has an underdog story been this likable and easy to root for. So by the time Ward completes his journey from chump to champ, you will be punching-the-air in celebration of this inspiring biopic that is powerful enough to land a decisive KO.

Movie Review of ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ (2011)

Loading ... Loading ...

The Adjustment Bureau is something rare: an enthralling, literate science fiction flick imbued with existential density, thematic texture, humanity and emotional warmth. In a sense, it is the motion picture that Christopher Nolan’s over-celebrated, emotionally barren Inception should have been. Admittedly, there is a mainstream-friendly vibe pervading the final third of this picture, and a few cliches are inescapable, yet the movie succeeds due to the fact that the audience can easily become invested in the characters’ fates. And, most importantly for a sci-fi thriller, The Adjustment Bureau poses thought-provoking questions and conveys provocative concepts. For a Hollywood product to tick such boxes in an age of brainless action extravaganzas, it’s a miracle.

Electoral candidate David Norris (Damon) is on the verge of becoming the youngest congressman to be elected senator of New York. However, due to unforseen bad press on the eve of the election, he is robbed of would-be victory. Prior to his concession speech, David has a chance meeting with spirited dancer Elise (Blunt) and romantic sparks fly, but Elise scurries away before providing any contact details. Yet, it is David’s experience with Elise that paves the way for the widely respected speech he delivers thereafter. Three fortuitous years later, David and Elise coincidentally cross paths again on a bus, and David attempts to woo her permanently. Unfortunately, the coupling apparently interferes with the “master plan” for both of their lives. Consequently, the Adjustment Bureau soon enters the picture. A group of formerly-dressed men who take orders from an enigmatic “Chairman”, the Adjustment Bureau make sure everything goes to plan, and for unknown reasons they are determined to prevent David and Elise from falling in love.

The premise is derived from Philip K. Dick’s 1954 short story The Adjustment Team. Like a majority of the cinematic adaptations of Dick’s short stories, The Adjustment Bureau’s writer-director George Nolfi was not entirely faithful to the original text, but he did retain the basic framework. Fortunately, before the sci-fi material takes hold, the film goes to great pains to put itself and its protagonist in the real world. There is a tremendous amount of character development during the film’s first act, allowing us to get to know David as a flesh-and-blood human. Furthermore, perhaps the most remarkable thing aboutThe Adjustment Bureau is that we can believe this romance from the start. When David and Elise have a leisurely conversation during their first meeting, there’s a palpable romantic spark between them. It’s easy to understand why the two are interested in each other, since, as humans, most of us can relate to the exhilarating feeling we experience when we meet and are dazzled by someone. Plus, the two characters simplyclick.

The Adjustment Bureau is a tight, resourceful thriller that’s unhurried but does not waste a single second of screen-time. Once the foundation of David’s everyday existence is shattered, the film shifts forward at breakneck fluidity with taut exposition and some exhilarating set-pieces. Yet, Nolfi did not forget how crucial the story’s human side is. After all, at its heart, The Adjustment Bureau is a poignant, powerful romance between two people who seem right for each other but face a unique kind of force keeping them apart. As a matter of fact, it’s genuinely surprisingly that The Adjustment Bureau is more of a romance than a sci-fi thriller. This is not to say that the Twilight Zone aspects are ignored or reduced to background colour, but the film is more concerned with provoking an emotional response than a logical one. The story is about love conquering all, and about people who risk everything for a chance at romantic joy and happiness.

Furthermore, it’s impressive to note that the picture dabbles in numerous genres yet manages to be completely airtight in its tone. After kicking off as a politics-laced romantic comedy (WTF?!), The Adjustment Bureau eventually veers towards mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, action, and cat-and-mouse thriller. Also, without using any usual scare tactics that one might typically see in a B-grade horror flick, Nolfi was able to build a disquieting, eerie mood. This is Nolfi’s directorial debut (his former day-job was as screenwriter extraordinaire, having co-written The Bourne Ultimatum and other films), and it’s a promising one. Commendably, Nolfi managed to handle the exposition with consummate skill; teasing viewers with tiny pieces of godly reveal, and keeping the Bureau’s origins playfully ambiguous. Credit is also due to veteran cinematographer John Toll who contributed to the stylish visual flair, and to Thomas Newman for his excellent score. The film’s finale is utterly breathtaking, with a unique, pulse-pounding foot chase through the streets of New York. However, the tidy way the film wraps up does admittedly feel too mainstream-friendly. It’s a satisfying ending, but perhaps a bit out-of-place in a film that’s otherwise so unpredictable.

Matt Damon is pitch-perfect as David Norris. Damon comes across as intrinsically human without ever having to try, and he’s an easy protagonist to care about and relate to. Alongside him, Emily Blunt is an excellent match for Damon, and their blistering chemistry fortunately keeps the focus on the characters rather than the mechanics of the narrative. Meanwhile, as members of the Adjustment Bureau, John Slattery and Anthony Mackie are both strong performers, and look as if they walked right out of a black-and-white 1940s movie and into this one. Rounding out the main players is Terence Stamp, who afforded a perfect amount of iciness and regality to his role.

Considering the usual standard for big-budget Hollywood motion pictures in this day and age, it is indeed refreshing to witness a film like The Adjustment Bureau; an assured, smart, creative sci-fi thriller which does not forget about humanity and warmth.

Welcome back Disney…

Cast: Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy & Ron Perlman

Directed by: Nathan Greno & Byron Howard

Screenplay by: Dan Fogelman

Plot:

Rapunzel (Moore) has been locked away in a sky scraping tower her whole life by a wicked old crone (Murphy) who uses Rapunzel’s golden, magical hair to keep herself forever young. Longing to see the outside world, Rapunzel’s dream finally comes true with the help of good-hearted thief Flynn (Levi).

Verdict:

When Pixar’s creative director John Lasseter took over Disney’s anmimation department back in 2006, he assured audiences that he would get the Mouse House back on track after a string of disappointing releases. Thus far Lasseter has lived up to that statement, starting out solidly with 2008’s Bolt and following it with The Princess And The Frog, which saw Disney magnificently return to classic hand-drawn animation. The latest to emerge under Lasseter’s watchful eye, Tangled - a modern re-telling of The Brothers Grimm fable Rapunzel - keeps Disney’s current run of form firmly on track.

For the most part, it’s classic Disney but this time around its been somewhat modernised. For example, the dashing hero Flynn wryly shrugs at one point “I don’t do backstory” and his horse named Maximus seems to think he is the John McClane of animal sidekicks. Meanwhile, our heroin princess is strong-willed, sassy and the film’s very sharp grasp of mother/daughter dynamics is the strongest yet for a Disney ‘toon. Said mother is terrifically voiced by Broadway star Donna Murphy perfectly capturing the vain aspect of her character, especially in the standout vocal of the film, ‘mother knows best’.

Elsewhere, there is a standout action sequence in which a dam bursts in the midst of a thrilling chase and there is decent comic-relief in the form of some brute thugs who dream of a bigger and better life. And as you would fully expect, the visuals are stunning throughout including Rapunzel’s streaming golden hair that is put to inventive use on several occasions.

Tangled almost finishes on a surprisingly dark note but doesn’t quite go through with it. However, before we even get to this point, Flynn and Rapunzel’s romance comes alive in a radiant sequence where thousands of floating lanterns light up the night sky as they watch from below. It’s beautifully realised and touches the heart in a way that only an on-song Disney can. The magic of Disney is still very much alive.

When I first saw the trailer for Limitless, I was intrigued with the plot. I just HAD to see this film! Limitless stars famed actor Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper, best known for his role in the 2009 comedy, The Hangover. This exciting action thriller takes place in modern day New York City.

Limitless is about a struggling writer, Eddie Morra (Cooper) who has recently been dumped by his girlfriend, Lindy (Abbie Cornish). After many failures in his life, including being a writer with a bad case of writers block, a failed marriage and now a short lived relationship, Eddie he has drawn the conclusion that he has no future and begins to lose all hope with his place in the world. Little known to Eddie, his perspective of his place in the world will soon change.

Eddie runs into his former brother-in-law, Vernon, and no sooner than they become reacquainted, Eddie has been introduced to a single dose of the “pharmaceutical” drug, NZT. Soon after Eddie tries the drug we see the effects it has on him. His world becomes so much brighter, literally. Everything which was once all gray from Eddie’s perspective is now crystal clear. We later discover that NZT is designed to access 100% of your brain which enables one to be more confident than virtually anyone and provides the ability to become rich and powerful. With his new found power Eddie finds himself facing many challenges; some good, some not so good.

There were a few things I enjoyed about Limitless. One element I enjoyed was the cinematography. As a viewer, the transitions Eddie experienced while on and off of NZT were more noticeable by whether the world as Eddie saw it was crisp, clear, vibrant colors or dull and gray. Another aspect of this movie which I enjoyed was the background music. Like the visual transitions, there was a transition in the music played during the ups and downs of Eddie’s journey.

While Limitless isn’t the greatest neuro-psych thriller I’ve seen, I can say that I enjoyed this film. It kept me entertained and there wasn’t a dull moment during the movie.

My verdict: 3.5 stars

The Nollywood Forever Website Makeover

The Nollywood Forever Movie Reviews website has undergone a makeover.

As some of you may be well aware last week there was a problem with the comments showing up on the site, as well as the fact that new comments couldn’t be made. So I rectified that but then I was looking at the site and thinking it needs a makeover so decided to revamp.

Everything is still more or less the same but laid out differently. All of the website pages like the A-Z Movie Review Index and How Nollywood took Over My Life are on the first navigation bar right at the top of the site. Next to that is also a search box, should you be searching for anything. The next navigation bar (the black one) lower down contains all the categories from Must Watch to Bin It.

The new site has a sliding feature box which will contain any of the posts that I think that people are most interested in, and then next is the most recent posts in category order, followed by the other recent posts.

At the very bottom of the site is a footer area containing Nollywood Stars, Recent Comments, Recent Posts and Nollywood Movie covers from Flickr.

On the sidebar we now have a subscription box which is a new feature. You can connect with me on Facebook, Youtube, Linkedin, Flickr and Twitter. I stay tweeting so holla! You can also put in your email to receive updates that way or subscribe via RSS feed.

Also in the sidebar are the things that were there before like the Google Friend Connect Box, links to other sites and the latest comment excerpts. Additionally I have linked the NollywoodLove YouTube channel, so the latest video from their YouTube channel will show in the sidebar.

A little bit about NollywoodLove for all of those who don’t know about them, because myself I was confused:

We love Nollywood movies and want to spread them around the web. For Free.

Whaaaaaaat? For Free?

Yes for free. We have a partnership with YouTube which enables us to run adverts alongside or inside the movies you are watching. This means we will be able to ensure a film is free for NollywoodLovers globally.

Do we buy movies legally? A little clarification. Firstly. Yes, yes and yes! we have invested tens of thousands of dollars buying the right to stream movies on YouTube and the internet. These are multi year contracts which go directly to the film production houses. This is very different and many times more expensive than what used to happen (buying a market copy and simply uploading and sharing), and is patently illegal.

Proof?

Some people say that surviving in high school is like surviving in the jungle, at least that’s what Marni (Kristin Bell) thinks. Being a loner with a face full of pimples, bad hair and large black rimed seeing glasses that covers half her face, drops her popularity level below the below average mark. Well, she is popular in one way and that’s being the victim of the beautiful cheerleader bully, Joanna (Odette Yustman). From public humiliations to aggressive attacks, Joanna makes high school the worst era of Marni’s life. Graduation day comes and Marni decides to turn her life around for the better, she moves away and becomes an associate at a successful public relations company. She soon discovers that her brother is getting married in a couple days, so she flies home to attend the wedding. As she walks through her kitchen door to meet the fiance for the first time, Joanna turns around and Marni nearly swallows her tongue. Will Marni seek revenge for four years of torment? Will Joanna finish where she left off in high school? Will Marni stop her brother from marrying Joanna?

Review:

This film is completely predictable from the trailer to the screening, yet I found it to be adorable. I’m sure many people can relate to Kristin’s character of being punished by the popular crowd for being an outcast. I liked that each character has two stories, one is the story they want others to see and the other is a hidden story locked away for all eternity. For instance, Joanna appears to be completely innocent with her career in nursing and helping others but her fiance doesn’t know that she used to bully his sister-another dark secret will unfold with Joanna later in the movie. Marni, newly successful VP of Public Relations, hides her not so proud high school years as a ‘loser’ from others.  Marni’s mother, Gail, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Joanna’s aunt, Ramona, Sigourney Weaver, (who also went to high school together) has their secrets too, and they come out during a special event.  The jokes weren’t ‘hold my stomach’ funny but they were entertaining to watch. Side note, between Sigourney and Jamie, I believe Jamie is more attractive, even more that Kristin and Odette. All in all, I will watch this film again.

Bradley Cooper is a good actor. This is common knowledge among society, mainly because the man can do a comedy role (The Hangover), and then do a horror movie (Midnight Meat Train), and then jump into a drama/thriller (Case 39), and lunge into a action/drama (Limitless), and have originality in each of his roles. He normally plays that guy, the one who is cool already, and is making his last step into the realm of Fonziness. But not so in this, the best movie so far this year, Limitless.

Eddie (Cooper) is a writer whose going nowhere. His girlfriend dumps him, and he hasn’t written a single word for his book. One day, he runs into a friend from his past, and is introduced to a pill that allows him full usage of his brain. He then turns his life around, and enters into the world of stocks, where he is introduced to a powerful man in the field (Robert Di Nero). But this sight comes with a price: People are after him. And he doesn’t know how to get away.

Best Aspects: The movie’s acting, score, shots (which were not good if you have motion sickness), and script (based on the great novel “The Dark Fields” by Alan Glynn) were all amazing.

Problems: There was a specific thing that the movie didn’t really reveal. The plot holes were very minimal, nay, non-existent, excluding this one, relatively large and questionable hole. Though it may have been left open on purpose, it is still something you’d expect to find somewhere.

Bottom Line: A-. Good movie, so far the year’s best. Good acting from Cooper, and a great supporting cast with good action and good writing blended in Neil Burger’s (The Illusionist) new film.
